Passport to Fishing

Have you ever played golf using a fishing pole?  Can you build your own watershed?  Can you clean and cook a fish?  Join us for a week of fun learning how to do all these things, as well as learning about knots and rigging, fishing tackle, how to assemble a rod, and how to cast.  You’ll also explore staying drug free through educational discussions with local law enforcement. At the end of the week, you will put your new skills to the test by fishing all morning at the campus.  You will leave with new angling skills, fun new ideas, and a bag full of goodies.

Prescribed Burn: April 15th, 2008

The first flames hit the ground

Watch the burn crew test fire on a section of the prairie before burning the entire section.

Prescribed Burn Techniques

Watch the techniques used by the burn crew. Notice the use of the drip torch to set the fire at the permiter of the prairie. In the background you can see several members of the crew watching for any flare ups that need to be taken care of.

The flames grow!

Watch the burn in the rear section of the Prairie. The flames are much taller due to the increased plant matter. In the foreground the soil is darkened by the black ash left after the fire.

Grasses on fire

Grasses dominate the oldest section of the prairie and carried the fire quite well. You can hear the wind and the crackle of the flames while you watch the crew conducting the burn. Watch for the use of the water sprayer and broom to keep the fire under control. The OSU Marion campus can been seen in the background.

Get Closer!

Get an up close view of the fire just like the burn crew. This video follows the Grasses on Fire and shows a close up of the fire and smoke. Watch as the wind carries the smoke and creates twisting cyclones of fire.

The Aftermath

Take a ride through the Prairie the morning after the burn was conducted. The black soil in the early morning sunlight illuminates the green grassy paths. In this video the success of the burn can be seen as very few plants remain. The birds can be heard singing in the background as they rediscover the prairie landscape.

Take time to read the Larry R. Yoder dedication plaque placed at the prairie in 2007. This plaque commemorates the founder of the Prairie Nature Center.
