Orientation Dates
The online registration system will allow you to choose your Orientation date. Once you select your intended major, the list of available Orientations for that major will be listed, allowing you to choose your preference. The sooner your register, the more likely you are to have a variety of dates from which to choose. All of our Orientations are held on Tuesdays.
Reserve an Orientation Session
Only students who have been sent a mailing from The Ohio State University at Marion with instructions for reserving an orientation session are able to access the online Orientation reservation system. Expect to receive your Orientation packet 7-10 days after you receive your acceptance letter from Ohio State. Watch your mail closely—you don’t want to miss this information.
In order to reserve an Orientation day, you will need to activiate your OSU username. This will also be your OSU email account. Visit the following website to activate your email account: https://acctmgt.service.ohio-state.edu/
Once you have activated your user name, and read through the information on this webpage and the information in your Orientation packet, you may register for your Orientation date: Orientation registration >>>

Preparing For Your Orientation Program
There are several things you can do ahead of time to make your Orientation day less stressful and more productive.
- Be sure that you have activated your OSU username. This is your OSU email account and you need to have it activated before you can take your Math Placement Test online. Visit the following website to activate your email account: https://acctmgt.service.ohio-state.edu/
- Take your Math Placement Test online. (The test is not available until after May 1.) Although you have the option of coming in early on Orientation day to take the test, students typically prefer to complete the test ahead of time. After reading the information in your Orientation packet, that was mailed to you, and registering for your OSU username, visit the following website to take the Math Placement Test:
http://www.ureg.ohio-state.edu/math
- Talk with your parents/guardians/spouse about your health insurance coverage. At Orientation, you must indicate whether or not you want OSU Health Insurance. Information on the OSU Health Insurance can be found at: http://shi.osu.edu
- If you are a male, be sure that you’ve registered with Selective Service. Bring your Selective Service number with you on Orientation day to avoid being charged non-resident fees. To register or to access your number, go to: http://www.sss.gov
Things to bring with you to Orientation
- A battery-operated calculator if you are taking the Math Placement Test on Orientation day
- Math placement test results from the web-based test
- A photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport), required to get your Buck ID card
- A transcript of any college course work (non-OSU) taken during high school, in case an official college transcript hasn’t arrived
- Warm clothes (some rooms may be chilly)
- An umbrella in case of rain
- A list of questions that you need to get answered while on campus
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to come to Orientation?
Yes, all students are required to attend an Orientation session.
- How do I get to The Ohio State University at Marion for Orientation?
You can download directions to campus at: http://www.marion.ohiostate.edu/delays_directions/directions.html.
Once on campus, follow the green campus signs to parking lots 1, 2 or 3. Once you park, check in at Maynard Hall. If you have a disability and need to park closer, you may park in the Maynard Hall lot and obtain a temporary parking permit from the receptionist in Maynard Hall room 100.
- Can I bring parents or other guests?
Yes, you are encouraged to bring your parents or other adult guests with you on Orientation day. We have special programming planned for your guests.
- Do I have to stay for the entire day?
Yes, Orientation begins at 9:30 a.m. (8:00 a.m. if you are taking the math test) and ends at 3:30 p.m. Students need to participate in the entire Orientation program.
- I’m going to take my classes at the Delaware Center. Do I need to come to Marion for Orientation?
Yes, the Delaware Center is part of the Marion Campus so you need to become familiar with both locations and what each one has to offer. Orientation programs are not scheduled at the Delaware Center because the facilities cannot accommodate the Orientation program.
- Do I have to pay to come to Orientation?
No
- If I take the Math Placement test and feel that I should have placed in a higher level math class, can I retake the test?
No, you may only take the Math Placement Test one time. You may take a proficiency exam for the course of your initial placement. These exams are similar to a final exam and a score of 70% or higher is needed to move ahead. You may take an exam only once for any course. There is a $40 charge for exams in Math 148 or above. The exams are given by appointment and are two hours long. Contact Jan Campbell at (740)725-6334.
- Will I take a Foreign Language Placement Test (FLPT) During Orientation?
No, the test will not be offered during Orientation. If you have two or more years of a foreign language during high school or are proficient in a foreign language, you may take the Foreign Language Placement Exam. The exam is on computer, but is available only at the media lab on Marion Campus or the testing office of the Columbus Campus. Please allow at least 45 minutes for the exam. Appointments are not required.
- What if I took AP courses in high school?
Please note that students who want to earn credit through the Advanced Placement Program must have their official score reports sent to the Office of Testing, 820 Lincoln Tower, 1800 Cannon Drive, Columbus, OH 43210. Contact APP at 1-888-225-5427 to designate The Ohio State University as an official score recipient. If your AP scores are in Math or English and are not reported to Ohio State in time for your orientation, take the placement exams as a back up. If your AP scores are high enough to give you course credit, they will take precedence.
- Should I take an Honors course?
Honors courses (marked with an "H" on the schedule of classes) are designed for students who are looking for a deeper experience in a particular area. Honors courses typically require more reading and writing, but less memorization. The H appears on your transcript and shows future employers that you are someone who goes the extra mile. Also, when you apply to professional and/or graduate schools this shows that you have a real academic commitment.
Students with ACT Composite scores of 25 or higher are encouraged to enroll in an honors course during their first quarter. Applications to be in the Honors program will be available to you once you are on campus during autumn quarter.
You do not need to be part of the honors program to take honors classes.
- How do I request disability services?
Most of the academic accommodations and services available to students during the academic year through the Office for Disability Services (ODS) are also available to you during orientation. Students with disabilities can receive support services that include test-taking assistance and adaptive transportation. Disability documentation must be presented to ODS for determination of eligibility prior to your orientation session. If arrangements are made in advance, ODS will help ascertain needs and arrange appropriate services during orientation for students. We cannot guarantee that services will be available at orientation if arrangements are not made in advance of the program. Contact Marge Hazelett for further information and to request services at (740)725-6247.
