| Graduate School |
 | In
contrast to undergraduate study that introduces you to wide range of subjects,
even though you major in one, a graduate program involves specialized knowledge
and concentrated study in one area. Graduate School is all about focus
and skills development. It is a time of intensive research and teaching, and through
this you will find within yourself the strength, direction, and resourcefulness
to make your time and your work valuable. It is a time for you to grow confident
in your academic skills, to stretch your capabilities and find your limitations.
It is also a time to fully translate your intellect into action, to find new ideas
and direct them towards new intellectual goals. All of these developments will
help you personally, academically, and professionally. |

| Master's Degree |
 | A
master's degree is granted to students who complete one or two years of study
after receiving a bachelor's degree. Admission to graduate programs (masters or
doctorate) can be competitive. Students must often take the Graduate Record Exam
(GRE) when applying for admission to graduate school. Some programs require specific
undergraduate courses. Thus students who want to go to graduate school should
work with an advisor ahead of time to be sure they satisfy requirements. |

| Professional Degree |
 | A
professional degree prepares people to work in professions such as law, medicine,
or architecture. Study for a professional degree often requires at least six years.
In general, students spend four years working toward a bachelor's degree and then
spend another few years working toward their professional degree. |

|
| Doctoral Degree |
 | The
doctorate, or Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) is awarded to students who successfully
complete a program of two or more years beyond the bachelor's degree. In most
cases, students need four or five years of study after the bachelor's degree.
In some cases it may take longer. Some students start on a Ph.D. after receiving
a bachelor's degree and receive a master's degree during the course of their studies. |
