Findlay University too much firepower for the Wave
NCAA Division 2 team comes to campus

The Ohio State Marion women's volleyball program competed against an NCAA division 2 JV program for the first time at the Alber Student Center.

The match was played with both teams exchanging leads throughout each set.  But in the end, the Oiler attack found the gaps in the wave defense to secure the win 23-25, 18-25, 23-25.

"We had too many mistakes and miscues that prevented us from winning the first two sets," stated Coach Mark Sisler.   "Once we got into a 0-2 deficit, we just didn't respond to the adversity.  That has been uncharacteristic of us until now.  Our team knows that successful teams are those that commit the fewest mistakes in a volleyball match."

Scarlet Wave finish as runner-ups in Trailblazer Classic Tournament
Lady Wave continue successful season

The Ohio State Marion women's volleyball team continue to expand their successful season with wins this past weekend at the Trailblazer Classic Tournament hosted by Ohio Christian University.

The Scarlet Wave went undefeated in pool play by defeating Great Lakes Christian College and Berea College in straight sets 25-11, 25-16, 25-14, and 25-14, 25-15, 25-14 respectively.  The top seeded Scarlet Wave defeated Great Lakes Christian College for a second time in the semi-finals 25-14, 25-10, 25-14.

For the second weekend in a row, the Scarlet Wave finished as runner-ups to the nationally ranked (#2 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association) Rochester College in four sets, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 17-25.

"For the second straight weekend, we have played really well in tournament play. However, we just can't overcome the experience and depth that nationally ranked Rochester College brings to the court," states Coach Sisler. "We have lost to Rochester in three finals this year. But our team is gaining confidence and experience playing against the number two team in the nation."

"Our team played with a lot of determination and focus throughout the match tonight, especially having lost to OU Lancaster earlier in the season," Coach Sisler explains.  "We sought out redemption tonight and the ladies responded well to our adjustments."

The Scarlet Wave continue their successful season as they improve their overall record to 17-10, and they currently remain ranked 6th nationally among USCAA conference schools.

Scarlet Wave fall to USCAA ranked Cincinnati Clermont
Lady Wave suffer first conference loss

The Ohio State Marion's women's volleyball team competed in the Cougar Classic hosted by Cincinnati Clermont and came out with a 1-1 record.

In the final match, the Lady Wave fell short in set one, 23-25, but rebounded strongly in set two winning, 25-13.  However, the Lady Wave couldn't overcome the experience of Cincinnati Clermont, falling short in the final two sets, 21-25 respectively.

"We were disappointed that we didn't perform better against Cincinnati Clermont, but I give them lots of credit for executing their offensive against us," stated Coach Mark Sisler.  "The ladies know we had several opportunities during the match to secure a win, but unfortunately we didn't capitalize on them."

In the final pool-play match, the Scarlet Wave couldn't overcome the gritty play of eventual tournament champion Ohio University Lancaster, 20-25, 25-15, 11-15.

Scarlet Wave battle with sister campus OSU Newark
Lady Wave make adjustments to prevail

The Ohio State Marion's women's volleyball team fought a victorious battle with OSU sister campus Ohio State Newark Wednesday evening with a 3-1 match win.  OSU Newark came out strong with an early set win 22-25.  However, the Scarlet Wave found their rhythm during the remaining sets winning each 25-16, 25-23, 25-14.

Kelsey Rader (Bowling Green HS) led the Scarlet Wave with 22-of-22 serving and led the team in kills.

"After set one, our team made some adjustments in our hitting game that helped us secure a win against a scrappy team," stated Coach Mark Sisler.  "Our team's court experience also came through tonight when we really needed it.  We knew what to do during certain rotations against their defense."

Scarlet Wave participate in USCAA Early Bird Classic
Lady Wave continue to play well among USCAA competition

The first round of the 2009 USCAA Early Bird tournament placed Ohio State Marion against the top two teams in the USCAA.  #1 and defending national champion Spalding University showed why their the defending champion as their offensive attack was too quick for the lady wave.  Spalding defeated Ohio State Marion in straight sets 14-25, 22-25, 23-25.

The Scarlet Wave witnessed a repeat of last week's championship match with Rochester College.  Again, depth became a problem for the lady Wave as they fell short 25-15, 22-25, 20-25, 17-25.

"In both of these matches, we played well enough to possibly win a few more sets," stated Coach Mark Sisler.  "However, our mental toughness is currently not at the caliber of Spalding and Rochester."

Day two of the Classic was victorious for the Scarlet Wave.  The lady wave fought off a tough match with Indiana University Northwest and prevailed 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.  Everything was clicking for Ohio State Marion in the second match as they downed Hiwassee College 25-11, 25-9, 25-6 .  After losing the first set 14-25, the lady Wave finished the day strong with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 victory over a good St. Catherine College team from Kentucky.

"It was really nice to see our team respond in the right way after day one," stated Coach Sisler.  "Throughout the day, our team's consistent passing helped set up our in-system sets.  Our defensive blocking was also their when we needed it."
Weekend of August 28-29, 2009

Scarlet Wave finish as runner-up in Penn State Tournament
Lady Wave fall short to USCAA Rochester College

The lady wave began the tournament in good fashion by defeating Penn College in straight sets 25-9, 25-18, 25-10, and defeating Penn State Beaver in four 20-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-19.

"Our team got off to a good start vs Penn College and responded well to PSU Beaver's amazing start in the next match," stated Coach Mark Sisler.  "Our team began passing better which allowed our middles to hit the seams in their defense."

The next day's match united the Scarlet Wave with Rochester College.  "This championship match was a great match for us even though we fell short at the end," stated Coach Mark Sisler.  "Both teams exchanged leads throughout this match, and it seams that their depth was the deciding factor in our loss.  I hope this is an indication of what we can expect for us the rest of this season."
The final results:
25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 22-25.
Weekend of August 21-22, 2009

Scarlet Wave Kick-Off their 2009 season in Michigan
Lady Wave begin season in the Concordia University Kick-Off Classic

The lady wave fought off a scrappy Marygrove College team playing in their inaugural collegiate season.  The team won in straight sets 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.

"It was amazing we won each set because Marygrove was digging everything up," stated Coach Mark Sisler.  "Often, there defense was putting us out-of-system offensively.  It was a good match for both teams as we begin our seasons."

The lady wave couldn't find their rhythm in the next three matches of the Classic as they fell short to Purdue North Central (Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference member), perennial USCAA power Rochester College and the host school, Concordia University (Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference).
