Marion Native Andrew Todd To Be The Featured Performer In Five Nights On Campus 1999-2000 KickoffArt

Marion native Andrew Todd recalls viewing a television documentary on the famous pianist Vladimir Horowitz, then begging his parents for piano lessons. His parents approached local piano teacher Olive Joslyn, who attended First Presbyterian Church with the Todd family. Did she have time for their 12-year son, the Todds asked.

Joslyn's quick answer was no, then she later changed her mind and thought she could fit him into her schedule. Although their time together lasted only 18 months, Joslyn's impact was tremendous. She passed the gifted student on to piano instructors at Ohio Wesleyan University - Joann Hopper and Robert Griffith. Then later, introduced him to other teachers and opportunities that eventually led him to an education and career as a classical pianist.

"There are certain people you meet, and later you realize you had to meet them for a reason. There was simply no planning behind this," Todd said recently. Every teacher wants to keep great students, he said, but Olive Joslyn put her students' interests above her own. The two remained close over the years as he traveled around the world playing and learning. Todd returned to Marion during the 1997 holiday season, and visited and played the piano for her at the long-term care facility where she lived.

"She was always my musical conscience in Marion," Todd said of his first piano teacher.

Todd will return to Marion October 19 to inaugurate the fifth season of the Five Nights on Campus series of cultural arts programs at Ohio State Marion, 1465 Mt. Vernon Ave. His performance is dedicated to Olive Joslyn, who died in 1998. The concert will be held in the Morrill Hall auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Todd began his musical training at age 12 on both the piano and organ. By age 17, he was performing with the Columbus Symphony. In the summer of 1991, he was selected to take part in a cultural exchange of musicians from around the country to study at the Gnessin Institute of Music in Moscow.

After graduating from Marion Harding, he attended Northwestern University, receiving a full scholarship to study piano. He earned bachelor's and a master's degrees in 1995.

During 1997 and 1998, Todd received a scholarship to study piano at the highly acclaimed Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, where he studied piano with Herbert Stessin of the Julliard School of Music. At the music festival, Todd was featured in several young artists' concerts both as a soloist and as a collaborative artist. In addition to his formal studies, Todd has performed for and has been coached by pianists David Kaiserman, Emilio del Rosario, and numerous others.

An avid outdoorsman, Todd is an enthusiastic fly-fisherman, runner, and hiker. A former professional soccer player, he has played soccer in Peru, Germany, and the United States. He currently serves as assistant coach of the New York University's women's soccer team. Todd and his wife, Lauren, reside in New York City.

Tickets are $7 general admission and $3 for students. Advanced ticket sales can be made by calling The Ohio State University at Marion Office of Community Relations, (740) 389-OSUM extension 6279. Season tickets for all Five Nights on Campus performances are available for $25 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and $15 for students.

Future Five Nights on Campus performances are:

  • December 9 - Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra with the Marion Civic Chorus
  • February 3, 2000 - "Down by the Riverside," a musical performed by Advent Players of Columbus.
  • March 9, 2000 - Opera/Columbus performing the Central Ohio premiere of "How the Camel Got Its Humps."
  • April 27, 1999 - Author Lee Abbott.

Kuhn Art Gallery Dedication Set For October 19 On Ohio State Marion Campus

The Wayne and Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery will be dedicated October 19 at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Ohio State Marion, marking the beginning of an era of expanded and modern art exhibit space to be enjoyed by residents of Central Ohio.

The Kuhns, Marion residents since 1947, provided funds to renovate and expand the Morrill Hall art gallery space to create a state-of-the-art facility to serve students and residents of the North Central Ohio region.

The expansion adds an estimated 60 percent more exhibit space, a heat and temperature controlled environment, a hardwood floor, and modern security and lighting systems. The renovated gallery will be in the same approximate location as the current gallery on the first floor of Morrill Hall and will be totally handicapped accessible.

The Wayne and Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery is expected to host high quality, diverse exhibits of many different media, including photography, painting, drawing, watercolors, ceramics, glass, prints, computer graphics, installation art sculpture, jewelry, and weavings. The expanded and renovated gallery will attempt to attract art exhibits of statewide and national prominence and be one of the preeminent exhibit areas in Ohio.

The opening exhibit will be paintings by Marion artist Dianne Almendinger, an emeritus faculty member of The Ohio State University Department of Art. The exhibit will run through Nov. 5.

"We are pleased to make this gift available as a way to show our appreciation for having such a nice campus in our community," said Wayne Kuhn. "We expect it to become a focal point for art appreciation and education for the entire North Central region of Ohio."

Todd DeVriese, assistant professor of art on the Marion campus, said the new gallery will become a centerpiece for art opportunities on campus and in the community.

"Ohio State Marion students will have the opportunity to view and learn from the numerous exhibits expected to be on display in the Kuhn Gallery," DeVriese said. "The Marion community also will benefit from the dedicated art exhibit space that will remain free and open to the public.

In addition, The Kuhn Gallery will be a learning tool for all art, with programs, lectures, and gallery talks scheduled to emphasize the educational aspects of the exhibitions, according to DeVriese. "The Kuhn gallery will further the educational opportunities for all art students - including high school, college and adult learners - and will be a much appreciated addition to our program," DeVriese said.

Marion Artist To Be First Featured In Renovated Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery

The Wayne and Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery is pleased to present as its first exhibit paintings by Marion artist and emeritus associate professor of art Dianne Almendinger.

Like her career, the art of Dianne Almendinger displays layers of texture. Many people at The Ohio State University at Marion know Almendinger as a teacher of studio art courses, and much of her art displays her mastery of the exacting art of drawing in pencil.

Others know her as a professor of the history of art, and some of the pieces exhibited here include bits of Celtic tracery or motifs from Japanese prints.

Most people at Ohio State Marion know Almendinger as a professor of African art in particular, and the influence of that continent is visible in the brilliant colors and the rhythmic sense of pattern that are perhaps the most impressive elements of her work.

Above all, anyone who knows Almendinger personally will recognize that the combination of energy and harmony on display in the Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery is a perfect expression of her vibrant personality.

Almendinger received her B.A. and M.F.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University, as well as certificates in African art from Northwestern University and the University of Massachusetts.

A native of Marion, she has lived in Ghana and Nigeria, and traveled extensively in Africa and Europe. This past summer, she organized and led a tour to Athens, Greece, and the Greek Isles for Ohio State students at the Marion and Mansfield campuses.

Almendinger's works will be on display through Nov. 5. A public reception in her honor will be held Oct. 19 at 6 p.m.

Exhibits in the Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery, an expanded and contemporary exhibit space on the Ohio State Marion campus, will be dedicated Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m. It is located on the first floor of Morrill Hall, 1465 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion, and serves residents of Central Ohio.
