Strategic Planning Seminar for Marion Area Businesses and Organizations Offered

The Non-Profit Connection, a collaboration of north central Ohio community minded non-profit organizations, will hold a strategic planning seminar, "The Reality of Survival" featuring Scott A. Frye of Strategic Concepts, LLC, Thursday, September 12, 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Ohio State University at Marion's Morrill Hall.

"Strategic Planning, The Reality of Survival" will outline the big picture of performance management, basic definitions of strategic planning, the importance of planning, national and local trends, stories of success and failure, where to begin with strategic planning, the risks involved in lack of planning, as well as practical structured models of strategic plans. Frye's presentation style provides humor and simplification to the complex issues involving strategic planning.

Organizers of the seminar recommend it for board members and senior staff of both public and non-profit organizations. The evening begins with registration and a light dinner from 4 to 5 p.m. Next Frye will present the core of the seminar, "The Reality of Survival, What it is, what it isn't, and why your organization must do it, followed by a how to model of strategic planning implementation.

According to Frye, "The seminar offers the structure and discipline necessary to get clear about the question of why plan. It provides an opportunity to influence the future and to tell your story of success and challenges."

Frye is CEO of Strategic Concepts, LLC, a Columbus based management consulting firm dedicated to improving the performance of public and not-for-profit organizations. He has consulted with many public, private, and not-for-profit organizations throughout the country. He has facilitated strategic planning for a variety of customers including: the District of Columbia Department of Mental Health, Office of the Chief Technology Officer, Department of Transportation, Department of Housing and Development, and the South Carolina Department of Human Resources. 

Frye has active information technology consulting engagements with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission and the Franklin County ADAMH Board.

Ohio State Marion's Five Nights Season Begins With Award Winning Recording Artist Steve Free

The Ohio State University at Marion is pleased to announce the schedule of performances for its annual Five Nights on Campus series, beginning in October with nationally recognized singer/songwriter Steve Free. Season tickets are now on sale through the university's Office of Community Relations
 
Five Nights on Campus is a cultural and musical arts outreach to the residents of the seven-county regional service area of Ohio State Marion. The series features a variety of entertainment styles, from classical music to bluegrass. The mission of the series is to provide unique cultural and educational opportunities about diverse cultures and backgrounds to the community, while encouraging area residents to take part in university life. The Five Nights series offers residents of north central Ohio an affordable entertainment venue close to home.
 
The Wayne and Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery, located in Morrill Hall at Ohio State Marion, will also be open throughout each evening's performance for concert patrons to enjoy unique art exhibits from area artists.
 
The performance series starts October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Morrill Hall on the campus of Ohio State at Marion with Steve Free. Free is an award-winning recording artist that uses his Appalachian/Native American roots to deliver thought provoking lyrics, and encourage fun-filled audience participation. 
 
Signed as a recording artist through Fraternity Records, Free scored a number one hit in January 2002 on the international country/folk chart with his single, "Without Your Love." The song is off his recent album, "Timeline." "Without Your Love" received airplay on nearly one thousand country, college, Americana, and National Public radio stations across the country. Free was awarded an Airplay Platinum Album for the song in July 2002. The Platinum Record is awarded for more than 100,000 units of airplay.
 
The third release off his "Timeline" CD, "Connecticut Cowboy," is currently played on over 500 radio stations around the world. The song was released on a CD of country singles featuring Grammy Award winner Lee Ann Womack. 
 
Over his career, Free has placed five songs on national and international music charts, sharing time at the top with artists like Loretta Lynn, The Bellamy Brothers, and Kenny Rogers. Free has won several music industry awards, including the Academy of Independent Singer/Songwriter of the Year in 1996. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, The Appalachian Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts recently commissioned Free to compose a song for the Bicentennial Commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Other Five Nights performances slated for the year are:
The Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra, December 12, 2002 The group will perform a concert of traditional seasonal numbers, carols from around the world, popular sing-a-longs, and a number for the children in the audience. Also performing will be the Marion Civic Chorus and the Heart of Ohio Men's Holiday Chorus.

Gospelfest 2003, February 20, 2003 Presented by Raise Productions, this highly acclaimed concert is held in partnership with the Black Heritage Council in celebration of Black History Month. Enjoy an encore performance of choral, spiritual, traditional, and contemporary gospel music by the Raise Mass Choir of Columbus. A soul food dinner, presented by the Black Heritage Council, will be held prior to the performance.

Andrew Manfred Brown, March 20, 2003 A classical pianist and former college professor, this Kentucky artist will combine educational and entertaining dialogue with pieces by Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms.

The Muleskinner Band, May 15, 2003 Muleskinner provides quality bluegrass, gospel, and traditional acoustic music, featuring banjo, mandolin, and guitar. The band will perform an open-air concert, weather permitting.

All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Holiday Concert will be held in the Alber Student Center. Weather permitting; The Muleskinner Band will perform on the portico outside Morrill Hall lobby. All other performances will be held in the Morrill Hall Auditorium. Light refreshments will be served after each performance, with the opportunity to meet with the artists.

The cost for the entire Five Nights season of performances is $30 adults, $25 seniors, and $15 for students. The cost for an individual Five Nights performance is $8 adults and $3 for students.

The Ohio State University Marching Band will also perform at The Palace Theatre on November 13, 2002. Contact The Palace Theatre in Marion at 740-382-2101 for tickets and information.

This year's sponsors for the Five Nights series include: Clear Channel Radio, Marion; Herald Printing; Marion Steel; Medical Mutual; Warren Brown Family Foundation; Verizon; Whirlpool Corporation, Marion Division; and Wyandot Inc. Five Nights is also made possible through a grant from The Ohio Arts Council, which helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
