The elementary program’s overall goal is to motivate students to work towards a fulfilling career. Other goals include:
-Encouraging students to investigate careers and the postsecondary
education required.
-Encouraging students to daily work towards that goal.
-Encouraging teachers, mentors, and parents to motivate students.
-Encouraging parents and families to begin saving.

Will Study to be a...” A Career Card Sorting Activity
This activity provides each student with a set of career cards with pictures. Prompts for sorting and graphing activities in class are provided and the activity can be sent home for extension activities. |

Look Out, College, Here I Come
This rhyming book, written by Gov. Michael Easley of North Carolina, is read to each class and donated to the school’s library. Language arts and social studies activities are provided. |

Happily Ever After
This booklet features fairy-tale characters who return for a high school reunion and share their careers. Each student receives a copy. Activities are provided. |

“Chris College Visits
Central Ohio Colleges”
This
activity features a booklet presented on an overhead.
The character visits many local postsecondary
institutions and activities are provided to encourage
students to plan for their dream for the future.
Language arts and social studies activities are
provided. |

The following letter-writing activities are appropriate for either 4th or 5th grades. Teachers in each building should plan which level will do each so students do not repeat a project. |

“I’m Going to College!” Letter-Writing
This activity practices letter-writing skills (either friendly or business) while writing to colleges to ask questions and request a pennant. Postage and a college address list will be provided. Supplementary activities include a map activity and a rounding/graphing activity that compares expected lifetime incomes of various education levels. |

“Adopt-A-College-Student” Letter-Writing
This activity encourages students to examine college life by writing to a college student. The book, Mahalia Mouse Goes to College, by John Lithgow can be used as a possible introduction to the activity and will be provided in addition to the postage required. Supplementary activities include extensions based on the book. |

“Dream Jobs”
The E-WOW Career Inventory is purchased for each student. This inventory leads to potential job interests and could be the basis for a research project about that job. |

Community Leader’s Visit
(This activity is currently limited to Marion County and has been a tradition of the Marion Rotary Club.)
Community leaders share a reading activity, discuss the importance of postsecondary education, and talk about their educational and career experiences. This year the booklet, “I’m Going to College” was shared during the forty-minute visit. |
